Cloquet runs 14 city parks covering hundreds of acres with more than two miles of trail, which is a substantial system for a city of 12,500 (City of Cloquet, accessed 2026-08-13). Pinehurst Park is the everyday anchor: 12.3 acres in the middle of town with a lifeguarded sand-bottom chlorinated swimming pool, basketball courts, and walking trails, turning over to skating and sledding in winter. Veterans Memorial Park handles civic gatherings and memorial observances, and Pine Valley Recreation Area carries cross-country ski trails, ski jumps, and a winter tubing hill, which makes Cloquet one of the few cities in Minnesota still operating municipal ski jumps.
The regional assets are what make the recreation picture strong. Jay Cooke State Park is about 15 minutes south and holds the swinging bridge over the St. Louis River rapids, one of the largest hiking, mountain biking, and groomed cross-country ski networks in northeastern Minnesota, and a campground. The Willard Munger State Trail's Carlton trailhead is about 10 minutes away, opening 70 paved car-free miles between Hinckley and Duluth on the old railbed, groomed for snowmobiles in winter on designated segments.
Closer in, the University of Minnesota's Cloquet Forestry Center sits on the city's edge, a large managed research forest with trails and forest roads used locally for walking, running, and skiing. West and southwest, the Fond du Lac State Forest opens into a big landscape of forest roads, lakes, hunting ground, and snowmobile trail.
For water, the St. Louis River runs through the city and drops through the gorge at Jay Cooke, the Cloquet River is just north, and the lakes toward the state forest and up toward the Island Lake chain are inside half an hour. Alpine skiing means Spirit Mountain, about 20 minutes northeast. Indoors, the city's ice arena carries youth and high school hockey and does more social work in a Cloquet winter than any park does.
