About Cloquet Forestry Center
The Cloquet Forestry Center is the University of Minnesota's research and teaching forest on the edge of Cloquet, a large managed tract of pine and mixed northern forest that has been used for forestry research and field education for more than a century.
It is not a public park, and that distinction matters. Access, permitted uses, and trail availability are set by the University rather than by a parks department, and they change with research activity. Local residents do use the forest roads and trails for walking, running, and skiing where that is allowed.
What it gives Cloquet is something few small cities have: a working scientific institution with real land attached, and one of the longest-running forest research records in the Upper Midwest sitting at the city limits.
