Esko's own recreation infrastructure is modest: the school campus fields and playground do most of the work, along with Thomson Township's park facilities. What makes the outdoor picture here strong is the township's other resident.
Jay Cooke State Park occupies the St. Louis River gorge about six miles south, and it is one of the best state parks in Minnesota. The swinging bridge over the rapids is the signature, but the substance is the trail network: dozens of miles of hiking, mountain biking, and groomed cross-country ski trail along the gorge, plus camping, a visitor center, and the river itself. The southern reach of the Superior Hiking Trail runs through it, which puts Esko among the closest residential communities to the trail's southern end (Minnesota DNR, accessed 2026-08-13).
The Willard Munger State Trail passes through Carlton just beyond the park, giving paved car-free access along 70 miles of old railbed between Hinckley and Duluth. It is flat, it is groomed for snowmobiles in winter on designated segments, and it is the best long-distance ride in the region.
Closer to home, the township road grid is the everyday recreation surface: low-traffic gravel and pavement through farm and forest that local road and gravel cyclists ride constantly and that doubles as running and skiing terrain in the right conditions. Spirit Mountain is about fifteen minutes northeast for alpine skiing, tubing, and lift-served mountain biking. Cloquet's Pinehurst Park and city facilities handle youth sports and the ice arena about ten minutes west. And for water, the St. Louis River, the Cloquet River, and the lakes north of the reservation are all inside twenty minutes.
