Getting around Esko, Minnesota

Esko is total car country with excellent highway access, which is an unusual and valuable combination. Downtown Duluth is about 22 minutes straight up I-35, the Miller Hill corridor about 24, the Duluth International Airport about 25, and Superior, Wisconsin about 28. Cloquet is about 10 minutes west and Jay Cooke is 6 miles south. The interstate is what makes a genuinely rural address work as a commuter community.

There is no transit. Duluth Transit Authority service does not extend here, and any regional or dial-a-ride coverage should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. Plan on a vehicle per driver, and plan on teenagers driving to everything.

Cycling is recreational rather than practical. The township roads are excellent for road and gravel riding, the Munger Trail and Jay Cooke are ten minutes away, but there are no bike lanes, no separated paths in the community, and no realistic bicycle commute to Duluth on a highway shoulder.

Winter driving, honestly. Esko misses most of the lake-effect snow that lands on Duluth's east side, which means less shoveling in a typical season. What it does not miss is cold, wind, and drifting across open ground on the township roads, and township plowing is slower than city plowing, particularly on the outer roads and private drives. The I-35 corridor between here and Duluth is well maintained but sees fog, blowing snow, and periodic closures in serious weather, and if you commute daily you will spend a handful of mornings a winter deciding whether to go. All-wheel drive and a long driveway plan are both worth having.

Biking: Almost entirely recreational rather than practical. Low-traffic township roads make good road and gravel riding, and the Willard Munger State Trail and Jay Cooke's trail network are about 10 minutes southwest. There are no bike lanes, no separated paths in the community itself, and no realistic bike commute to Duluth.
