Carlton is a car town with unusually good regional access for its size. Downtown Duluth is about 22 minutes up I-35, the Miller Hill corridor about 24, the Duluth International Airport about 26, Superior about 28, and Cloquet about 10. The interstate interchange at MN 210 south of town is the connection, and it is what makes a county seat this small viable as a commuter base.
Transit is minimal. Duluth Transit Authority service does not extend to Carlton County, and any Arrowhead Transit or Fond du Lac Band service should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. Plan on a vehicle per driver.
Cycling is the standout. The Munger Trail through town gives paved car-free riding in both directions, Jay Cooke's off-road network is minutes away, and the low-traffic county roads around town are pleasant riding. Within the town, the compact grid is walkable for the downtown and the trailhead, though not for groceries.
Winter driving, honestly. Carlton sits well inland from Lake Superior, so it misses the lake-effect bands that hit Duluth's east side, but it gets a full northern Minnesota winter with cold, wind, and drifting across the open country west of town. I-35 between here and Duluth is well maintained but sees fog, blowing snow, and periodic closures in serious weather, so a daily Duluth commute means several difficult mornings a season. MN 210 through the park is scenic and considerably less reliable in winter.
Biking: Carlton is one of the best cycling addresses in this guide and it is not close. The Willard Munger State Trail runs through the middle of town, giving paved car-free access along roughly 63 miles between Hinckley and Duluth, and Jay Cooke's mountain bike and hiking network is a mile and a half away. Very few small towns anywhere sit on a trail this good.
