- No lake. This is river-gorge country, and the nearest Lake Superior shoreline is about half an hour northeast.

What happened to Thomson?
It consolidated into Carlton in 2015. The neighbouring city of Thomson, on the Willard Munger State Trail and the river, is now part of the City of Carlton. This matters practically: older records, maps, and some listing data still reference Thomson as a separate municipality, which can create confusion about which jurisdiction a parcel is in and which taxes apply. Confirm with Carlton County for any specific property. Note also that Thomson Township is a separate entity from the former city of Thomson and still exists.
How close is Jay Cooke State Park?
About a mile and a half. Carlton sits at the northwestern gate of the park, which holds the swinging bridge over the St. Louis River rapids, the gorge, one of the largest hiking, mountain biking and cross-country ski networks in northeastern Minnesota, and the southern reach of the Superior Hiking Trail. For a household that will actually use a state park, there is no better-placed town in this guide.

The Willard Munger State Trail runs directly through town, which is one of the two principal trailheads on a roughly 63-mile paved, car-free route between Hinckley and Duluth. Jay Cooke's mountain bike trails are a mile and a half away, and the trail connects northeast toward Proctor and eventually Duluth's Cross City Trail. Very few towns of under a thousand people sit on infrastructure this good.
How far is Carlton from Duluth?
About 22 minutes to downtown Duluth on I-35, and roughly 24 to the Miller Hill retail corridor. That makes it closer than several communities people think of as Duluth suburbs.
