Carlton
Local lore in Carlton, Minnesota
Part of the Carlton neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
- The Munger Trail goes through the middle of town. Carlton is one of two principal trailheads on a roughly 63-mile paved rail trail, which is an absurd amount of car-free cycling for a town of 948 people.
- Jay Cooke's swinging bridge has been destroyed and rebuilt more than once, most recently after the June 2012 flood tore it out. The river gets a vote.
- Thomson stopped being a city in 2015. It consolidated into Carlton, which is why old maps and some listings still show a municipality that no longer exists. Thomson Township, confusingly, is a different thing and still does.
- The county seat has fewer than a thousand people. Carlton has a courthouse, county offices, and the administrative weight of a much larger town, and then everybody drives home at five.
- The park is named for a financier who went bankrupt. Jay Cooke's money built early Duluth, and his 1873 collapse ended the region's first boom, which did not stop Minnesota naming its gorge park after him.
- Everything in the county postdates October 12, 1918. The firestorm that swept Carlton County that day is the line the local built environment is measured from.
