Cloquet

Getting around Cloquet, Minnesota

Part of the Cloquet neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Cloquet is a car city with a walkable downtown core, which is a better combination than most of this region offers. Downtown Duluth is about 25 minutes up MN 33 and I-35, the Miller Hill corridor about the same, the Duluth International Airport about 27, and Superior about 30. Within the city, the flat grid and the surviving downtown mean a lot of residents can walk or bike to errands, school, and the river in a way they could not from a Duluth hillside address.

Transit is limited. Duluth Transit Authority service does not extend to Cloquet, and regional coverage should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. For most households this is a vehicle-per-driver city.

Cycling is decent. Flat streets, paved path segments, low traffic volumes on the residential grid, and the Munger Trail trailhead ten minutes south. Jay Cooke's singletrack is 15 minutes away. There is no meaningful bike commute to Duluth on the highway.

Winter driving, honestly. Cloquet sits outside the Lake Superior lake-effect corridor, so a typical winter drops less snow here than on Duluth's east side, and the city is flat, which removes the hill problem entirely. The real winter variable is the commute. I-35 between Cloquet and Duluth sees fog, blowing snow across open stretches, and periodic closures in serious weather, and anyone commuting daily will have several mornings a season where the drive is genuinely bad or not worth attempting. If you take a job in Duluth and buy in Cloquet, budget for that reality rather than assuming a 25-minute drive is 25 minutes every day.

Biking: Better than most towns this size. Cloquet has paved path segments connecting parks and the river corridor, low-traffic city streets on the flat grid, and the Willard Munger State Trail trailhead in Carlton about ten minutes south, which opens 70 paved car-free miles. Jay Cooke's mountain bike and hiking network is 15 minutes away.
