Thomson Township parks
Thomson Township, Carlton County, MN
About Thomson Township parks
Thomson Township provides the local park and recreation facilities serving Esko, the community of Thomson, and the rural area between Cloquet and the St. Louis River gorge. The inventory is modest by city standards: ball fields, playground equipment, picnic areas, and river access points (Town of Thomson, accessed 2026-08-13).
Township recreation works differently from city recreation, and buyers moving out from Duluth or Cloquet should understand the difference. Facilities are fewer, maintenance schedules are lighter, and there is no parks and recreation department running programming. What fills the gap is the school district, the volunteer organizations, and the fact that Jay Cooke State Park sits inside the township's own boundaries.
That last point is the real story. A township with one of Minnesota's better state parks in it does not need to build much.
Good to know: ball fields, playground, picnic areas, boat and river access.
Neighborhoods it serves
The school district people move for, on an old farm settlement 20 minutes from Duluth.
CarltonThe county seat at the gates of Jay Cooke, where the Munger Trail meets the gorge.
CloquetThe mill town that burned down in 1918 and rebuilt itself, twenty minutes from Duluth.
ScanlonThe small city between Cloquet and Esko, on the river and the interstate.
