Schools in Lakeside, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the Lakeside neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
Lakeside sits in Duluth Public Schools (ISD 709). The usual pathway is Lester Park Elementary, then Ordean East Middle School, then Duluth East High School. Attendance boundaries do change, and blocks at the far northeast edge of the neighborhood may be assigned to Lakewood Elementary instead, so confirm your specific address with the district before you count on a school.
Lester Park Elementary sits at 5300 Glenwood Street, inside the neighborhood, and enrolls roughly 510 students in K-5 (NCES Common Core of Data, 2024-2025, accessed 2026-08-13). It is walkable from a large share of Lakeside, which is one of the practical reasons families choose these blocks. Lakewood Elementary, at 5207 North Tischer Road, is much smaller at roughly 254 students and serves the rural northeastern edge and the Lakewood Township area.
Ordean East Middle School on East 4th Street enrolls about 1,037 students, and Duluth East High School enrolls roughly 1,495 (NCES, accessed 2026-08-13). East is at 40th Avenue East and Superior Street, which puts it on Lakeside's western doorstep and within walking or short-biking distance for much of the neighborhood, a genuinely rare arrangement for a high school.
The private picture changed in a way Lakeside families should know about. St. Michael's parish school here was folded into Stella Maris Academy, the city's consolidated Catholic system, which teaches early childhood through grade 3 at its Holy Rosary campus on East 4th Street and the later grades at St. John's and on Allendale Avenue (Stella Maris Academy, accessed 2026-08-13). The effect is that a Catholic-schooling family here drives west rather than walking to a parish school. Marshall School on Rice Lake Road is fifteen to twenty minutes. Private schools are not covered by Minnesota Department of Education report card data, so this guide does not rate them alongside the public schools.
The east side's other neighborhood elementary, at 5300 Glenwood Street, walkable from much of Lakeside.
