About Lakewood Elementary
Lakewood Elementary is the smallest of the east-side elementaries in Duluth Public Schools (ISD 709), enrolling roughly 254 students in kindergarten through fifth grade (NCES Common Core of Data, 2024-2025, accessed 2026-08-13). It sits at 5207 North Tischer Road, well up above the shoreline neighborhoods, and serves the rural northeastern corner of the city along with the Lakewood Township area.
Its size is the defining characteristic and the reason families sometimes seek it out: enrollment is roughly half that of Lester Park Elementary, which produces smaller cohorts and a rural-school feel inside a city district. Students continue on to Ordean East Middle School and Duluth East High School.
Because it draws from a large, thinly settled area, busing distances here are longer than at the shoreline schools. Attendance boundaries change between years, and the line between Lakewood and Lester Park Elementary runs through the northeastern edge of the Lakeside and Lester Park neighborhoods, so confirm the assignment for a specific address with the district before relying on it.
