Lakeside

Daily life in Lakeside, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Lakeside neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

The Superior Street block covers more of daily life than most Duluth neighborhoods manage. Marshall Hardware at 4415 East Superior Street handles the leaky faucet and cuts keys, Lakeside Liquors at 4507 handles what Lakeside could not legally handle until 2016, and Yarn Harbor, StitchCraft Quilt Factory, Matilda's Dog Bakery, Duluth Studio Market, The Grooming Shack, and E-Bike Duluth fill in around them (Destination Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). Avenue 45 Hair Designers and a few studios sit around the corner on 45th Avenue East.

The gap is groceries. There is no full-service supermarket in Lakeside, so the weekly shop means driving to Kenwood, the Plaza, or the Miller Hill corridor, roughly ten to sixteen minutes depending on where you live in the neighborhood and where you shop. Plan on a stocked pantry, which is good winter practice here anyway. The nearest full pharmacy counter is likewise a drive rather than a walk.

For medical, both Essentia Health and St. Luke's are downtown-adjacent, about twelve to fifteen minutes away. Big-box retail, the mall, and most chain services are on Miller Hill. Gas is available along the Superior Street and London Road corridors. The Duluth Public Library's main branch is downtown.

Noise: Quiet residential on most blocks. Traffic noise along Superior Street and London Road, foghorn and ore boat sound off the lake in fog, and occasional aircraft. No rail or freeway noise, which distinguishes it from much of the city.
