Errands from the North Shore strip mean driving, and the useful thing to know is that you have two towns rather than one.
Southwest, eight minutes, the Lakeside block covers hardware at Marshall Hardware, liquor, coffee, and a handful of shops, and the east Duluth grocery stores at Mount Royal and the Plaza are ten to fifteen minutes past that. Northeast, twenty minutes, Two Harbors carries a full grocery, pharmacy, hardware, medical, and restaurants in one small town, and plenty of households here use it precisely because it is one stop rather than several.
Miller Hill, about twenty-two minutes southwest over the hill, covers big-box retail and most chain services, and downtown is twenty minutes for banking and the main library branch.
Medical is a real consideration at this distance. Essentia Health and St. Luke's are both downtown-adjacent, roughly twenty minutes southwest, and Two Harbors has a hospital and clinic about twenty minutes northeast. Households managing regular appointments should decide in advance which direction they are going and what they would do in an emergency.
The local practice is provisioning. Keep a deep pantry through the winter, batch the trips, keep the vehicle fueled, and have a plan for a two-day outage. On this shoreline that is not caution, it is Tuesday.
