Lakeside

Who lives in Lakeside, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Lakeside neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Lakeside reads as a family and long-tenure neighborhood. The most visible household types are families with school-age children, drawn by the Lester Park Elementary and Duluth East pathway and by how much of the neighborhood is walkable to a park or a rink, and older owners who bought decades ago and have not left. Ownership rates are high and rental stock is limited, mostly duplexes and upper-lower conversions on the older blocks near Superior Street.

Because the housing skews toward two and three bedroom single-family homes at achievable prices, Lakeside is also one of the more realistic east-side entry points for first-time buyers, which keeps a steady flow of younger households moving in as older ones downsize. That mix, rather than any single group, is what gives the neighborhood its unusually deep volunteer base: the community club, the youth hockey and baseball associations, and the school parent groups all draw from it.

Commute patterns lean toward downtown, the two hospital systems, and the university corridor, with a meaningful remote-work share since 2020.
