Local lore in Lakeside, Duluth, Minnesota

• Lakeside was dry for 123 years. From annexation in 1893 until the city council repealed the charter provision on June 27, 2016, you could not buy a drink or a bottle inside the old village limits, and older residents still call the block "the dry side" out of habit.
• Lakeside Liquors opened in the former Falk's Pharmacy building at 4507 East Superior Street. The pharmacy was part of the block's memory long before the liquor store arrived.
• The street names are a history lesson. McCulloch Street carries the name of the former US Treasury Secretary who platted the land in 1871, and Jay Street and Cooke Street point back to the financier Jay Cooke, whose money built early Duluth.
• Sammy's Pizza has been in the family since 1958, and the Lakeside location is where east-side kids have ended up after hockey games for generations. Every September the Lester Park Rendezvous fills the pavilions at Lester Park, run by the Lakeside-Lester Park Community Club in partnership with the City.
• The ridge above the neighborhood is Hawk Ridge, where volunteers count tens of thousands of migrating raptors each fall. On a good north-wind day in mid-September the sky over Lakeside is genuinely full of birds.
• Winter storm bands off Lake Superior have a habit of stopping at an avenue line. It is normal for Lakeside to get six inches while Piedmont, above the hill on the other side of the city, gets one.
