About Stella Maris Academy

Stella Maris Academy is the consolidated Catholic school system for Duluth, formed by unifying the parish schools of St. James, Holy Rosary, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Michael's in Lakeside into a single academy under the Diocese of Duluth. It is the largest private option in the city and the main alternative to ISD 709 for east-side families.

Rather than one building, it runs four campuses split by grade band. The Holy Rosary campus at 2802 East 4th Street handles early childhood through grade 3 and enrolls roughly 295 students; St. John's on West Chisholm Street takes grades 4 to 6 with about 165; St. James in west Duluth runs early childhood through grade 6 with about 130; and the Jr./Sr. High campus on Allendale Avenue carries grade 7 upward (Stella Maris Academy, accessed 2026-08-13).

Two points matter for the neighborhoods in this guide. First, the Holy Rosary campus sits directly across East 4th Street from Holy Rosary Cathedral, which places it inside the Congdon Park and East End catchment and makes it walkable for part of that area. Second, because St. Michael's in Lakeside was folded into the academy, Lakeside and Lester Park families with a Catholic school preference now commute west rather than attending in the neighborhood.

Private schools are not covered by Minnesota Department of Education report card data, so this guide does not assign them a comparable rating.
