Hermantown

Restaurants & dining in Hermantown, Minnesota

Part of the Hermantown neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Hermantown's dining is honest about what it is: highway-corridor restaurants and neighborhood bars, with the metro's chain cluster on Miller Hill five minutes away and the actual food scene down in Duluth.

The bright spot is The Gumbeaux Guys, a Cajun and Creole operation run by a couple from Louisiana turning out gumbo, alligator balls, and catfish, and by a wide margin the most enthusiastically reviewed small food business in the city. Worth knowing before you drive over: it works as a food truck and caterer out of a Midway Road base rather than a fixed dining room, so check where it is parked. Do North Pizzeria and Pub at 5116 Miller Trunk Highway is the reliable family sit-down. Sammy's Pizza has a Hermantown location, part of the Duluth family operation that has been making the region's distinctive thin-crust since 1958.

For a night out with a room around it, The Social House at 4897 Miller Trunk Highway is the closest thing the city has, and McKenzie's Bar & Grill at 5094 Miller Trunk and Beacon Sports Bar & Grill cover the neighborhood bar and grill slot, with Beacon busy on Hawks nights. Caribou Coffee on the highway is, realistically, the city's morning coffee.

What Hermantown does not have is a walkable cafe, an independent bakery, a brewery, or fine dining. All of those are in Duluth: Lincoln Park's craft district is about twelve minutes, Canal Park about fifteen, and Blackwoods in Proctor is ten. If a coffee shop you can walk to is part of what you are shopping for, that is a genuine argument for Duluth Heights or Piedmont instead.
