You will love Hermantown if you want a newer house on a level lot with an attached garage, a small school district your kids will move through as one cohort, and five-minute access to everything on Miller Hill. It suits growing families who will use the fields and the rink, move-up buyers leaving a 1920s Duluth house and its hill, retirees who want single-level living near medical offices, remote workers who want space and quiet, and anyone who has decided that fighting a Duluth avenue every February is not how they want to spend the next twenty winters.
Look elsewhere if you want to walk to coffee, want a lake view, or want your neighborhood to have a history you can feel. Look elsewhere if the price per square foot bothers you, because Hermantown is the second-priciest per foot in the metro and you are paying for newness rather than character. Look elsewhere if you need transit, if periodic fighter-jet noise would grind on you, or if you want a large existing inventory to choose from, because resale here is thin and you may end up building.
If you like the idea but want a lower price and an older town with a real main street, look at Proctor ten minutes south. If you want above-the-hill convenience on the Duluth side with ISD 709 schools, look at Duluth Heights or Kenwood. If you want the same small-district, newer-housing profile in Carlton County, look at Esko.
