Restaurants & dining in Proctor, Minnesota

Part of the Proctor neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Proctor's dining is small and honest, and most of the good eating in the area is a short drive away rather than in town.

Black Woods Grill & Bar at 195 Highway 2 is the anchor. It is the Proctor location of the Duluth restaurant family that has been running dining rooms in the region since the early 1990s, sitting off I-35 next to the AmericInn with a banquet center attached, and it is where Proctor households go for a full sit-down dinner without leaving the hill. Proctor Pizza & Subs at 204 3rd Avenue covers the Friday night order and is a town fixture rather than a chain. And Farmer Doug, a three-generation family farm on Lindahl Road that has been going since 1984, sells seasonal vegetables, free-range chicken, cut flowers, and Christmas trees, which is exactly the kind of small local food operation this area produces and the metro's chain corridor does not.

Beyond that, you drive. Sammy's Pizza in Hermantown is about ten minutes north and is the nearest outpost of the Duluth pizza family that has been in business since 1958. The full Miller Hill dining cluster is ten minutes northeast. And for a real restaurant night, downtown Duluth, Canal Park, and the Lincoln Park craft district are 13 to 18 minutes down the hill.

There is no coffee shop, brewery, or bakery in Proctor that functions as a gathering place, which is the most commonly voiced complaint about living here and the fairest one. The nearest coffee is on the Miller Trunk corridor in Hermantown.
