Restaurants & dining in Silver Bay, Minnesota
Part of the Silver Bay neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
Silver Bay supports a small number of local restaurants and bars, and their number and hours move with the seasons and with the mining cycle. This guide does not name them without confirming current operating status, because small-town North Shore food businesses turn over faster than any listing keeps up with.
What is reliable is the corridor. Thirty minutes southwest in Two Harbors: Castle Danger Brewery at 17 7th Street, brewing since 2011 and now the fourth-largest brewery in Minnesota, with a patio over the lake; the Vanilla Bean at 812 7th Avenue for breakfast, going since 1998; Louise's Place at 19 Waterfront Drive; and Betty's Pies at 1633 Highway 61, a fixed point of Minnesota summer since 1958.
Forty-five minutes southwest, Russ Kendall's Smoke House in Knife River has been curing fish since 1908 and sells smoked salmon and lake trout over the counter.
Going the other way, the Lutsen and Grand Marais restaurants are about 45 to 60 minutes northeast, and that is where Silver Bay households head for a night out up the shore rather than down it.
The honest summary: Silver Bay is not a dining destination and does not present itself as one. Households here cook, and a restaurant meal is a planned trip in one direction or the other.
