Silver Bay is a car town and the distances are the real story. Two Harbors is about 30 minutes southwest, downtown Duluth about 65, the Miller Hill corridor about 70, and the Duluth International Airport about 70. MN 61 is the only meaningful route in and out.
There is no transit. Duluth Transit Authority service does not reach Lake County, and any regional or dial-a-ride coverage should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. Plan on a vehicle per driver, and plan on teenagers driving to everything.
Within the town, walking and cycling are genuinely pleasant, which is a direct benefit of the 1950s planning: level streets, sidewalks installed from the beginning, low traffic, and a commercial centre rather than a highway strip. The Gitchi-Gami segments extend that beyond the town limits.
Winter driving, honestly. The lake moderates the deepest cold, but MN 61 along this stretch of shore sees fog, lake-effect snow, and northeast storms, and there is no alternate route. A closure or a bad stretch on 61 is not an inconvenience here, it is the whole connection to Two Harbors and Duluth. Anyone considering Silver Bay with a Duluth-dependent job or medical need should think that through carefully rather than optimistically.
Biking: The Gitchi-Gami State Trail has completed paved segments through the Silver Bay and Beaver Bay area, which gives car-free riding toward Split Rock. MN 61 itself carries shoulder riding with heavy seasonal traffic. Within the town, the 1950s street layout is level, quiet, and unusually pleasant to ride, having been designed with sidewalks from the start.
