Getting around Knife River, Minnesota

Knife River is entirely car-dependent, with the compensation that the drive is genuinely pleasant. Two Harbors is about 12 minutes northeast, downtown Duluth about 25 southwest, the Miller Hill corridor about 32, and the Duluth International Airport about 32.

You have two routes in each direction, which is more useful than it sounds. Scenic 61 hugs the water and is slower, prettier, and more exposed. The MN 61 expressway runs inland and is faster and considerably more reliable in bad weather. Residents pick by conditions rather than by preference.

There is no transit. Duluth Transit Authority service does not extend into Lake County, and any regional or dial-a-ride coverage should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. Plan on a vehicle per driver.

Cycling is a genuine strength for recreation and useless for errands. Scenic 61 is a destination road ride; there is nothing to ride to.

Winter driving, honestly. The lake moderates the deep cold, so Knife River usually avoids the worst inland temperature extremes. What it gets instead is exposure: fog off the water, lake-effect snow bands, and northeast storms that come across open lake and hit this shore directly. Scenic 61 in a northeast blow is a serious piece of driving, and the expressway is the right call when it is bad. Anyone commuting daily should expect several mornings a season where the choice matters.

Biking: Scenic 61 through Knife River is one of the best-known road rides in Minnesota: low traffic, lake on one side, and rolling terrain the whole way between Duluth and Two Harbors. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail's paved segments start at Two Harbors and run northeast. Off-road, the Superior Hiking Trail on the ridge is hiking rather than riding.
