For a community of 212 people, the outdoor access here is close to absurd.
The marina is the everyday asset: a boat launch, transient slips, a breakwater, and Lake Superior access at the river mouth. It is the main public launch between Duluth and Two Harbors, and in a region where shoreline is mostly private or cliff, that matters.
The river is the second. The Knife draws steelhead in spring and salmon in fall, and the lower river and the mouth fill with anglers when the runs are on. Informal shoreline and riverbank walking around the harbor covers the everyday dog-and-coffee circuit.
Above the community, the Superior Hiking Trail runs the ridge, with overlooks down onto the lake and the river valley. It is one of the best long-distance footpaths in the country and it is a short climb from the front door, which almost nowhere else in this guide can claim.
Northeast, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail's paved segments start at Two Harbors and run up the shore, planned at 86 miles to Grand Marais with more than 36 complete. Gooseberry Falls State Park is about 22 miles up. Southwest, McQuade Road Safe Harbor is about six miles toward Duluth, and Flood Bay's agate beach is seven miles northeast.
On the road, Scenic 61 through Knife River is among the best-known cycling routes in Minnesota: low traffic since the expressway took the through volume, lake on one side, and rolling terrain the whole way.
Winter shifts to snowshoeing on the ridge, cross-country skiing on the Lake County forest trails, snowmobiling on the inland network, and, in cold years, the ice formations along the shore that draw photographers from across the region.

The harbor at the river mouth, built in the early 1970s and operated privately under Lake County ownership until the Minnesota DNR took it over in 2001. The community's working center and the main public access to the lake between Duluth and Two Harbors.
