Knife River reads as a very quiet rural shoreline community with almost no through traffic off the highway, minimal street lighting, no commercial nightlife, and long sightlines along the water. Summer brings visitor traffic to the smokehouse and the marina; the rest of the year the community is close to still.
For anything beyond feel, use published data rather than impressions. Knife River is served by the Lake County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension publishes uniform crime reporting data by agency, which is the correct starting point rather than a commercial "safety score." We describe streets and conditions, never the people who live on them.
The practical cautions here are the lake and the road, and both are serious. Lake Superior is cold enough year-round to incapacitate a swimmer quickly, the river mouth has current, and near-shore ice in winter is unreliable. Storm waves on this coast move rock and damage structures. Scenic 61 carries seasonal tourist traffic, often driven by people looking at the view rather than the road. Deer and the occasional moose are real hazards on both routes. And emergency medical response comes from Two Harbors, so the nearest hospital is twelve minutes away in good conditions and longer in bad.
