Two Harbors is a car town with a walkable core and one very good road out. Downtown Duluth is about 30 minutes southwest on the MN 61 expressway, the Miller Hill corridor and the airport about 35, and Superior about 40. Inside town, the flat grid and the compact downtown mean a lot of daily life is genuinely walkable, which distinguishes Two Harbors from most communities its size.
Transit is minimal. Duluth Transit Authority service does not extend to Lake County, and any regional or dial-a-ride coverage should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. Plan on a vehicle per driver.
Cycling is a genuine strength. The Sonju Trail covers the lakefront, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail starts here and runs northeast on paved separated path, and Scenic 61 southwest toward Duluth is one of the best-known road rides in Minnesota. Off-road, the inland forest roads work and Duluth's mountain bike systems are 30 minutes away.
Winter driving, honestly. The town itself is flat and straightforward, and the lake moderates the deep cold. The commute is the problem. MN 61 along the shore catches lake-effect snow bands, fog off the open water, and blowing snow, and northeast storms can make the shoreline stretch genuinely bad. Anyone commuting to Duluth daily should expect a handful of mornings each winter where the drive is difficult or not worth attempting, and should factor an alternate plan into the decision to buy here. Locally, plowing is prompt on the arterials and the highway; residential streets follow.
Biking: Strong for a town this size and getting stronger. The Sonju Trail runs the lakefront through town, and Two Harbors is the southwestern terminus of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, which is planned at 86 paved miles to Grand Marais with more than 36 miles complete, including the Silver Creek Cliff and Gooseberry segments. For road riders, Scenic 61 southwest toward Duluth is one of the best-known rides in Minnesota. Mountain bikers use the inland forest roads and the Duluth systems 30 minutes away.
