Lincoln Park
Local lore in Lincoln Park, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the Lincoln Park neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
- Everyone over fifty calls it the West End. The Craft District name is barely a decade old, and both are in current use depending on who you ask.
- The revival started with camping packs and beer, and it is concentrated in two blocks. Frost River making waxed canvas gear and Bent Paddle Brewing took the cheap brick buildings first, and West Superior Street between 18th and 20th Avenue West is still the heart of it despite the neighborhood running twenty-five avenues wide.
- There is a waterfall three blocks from the breweries. Miller Creek drops through Lincoln Park on a 1.2-mile trail that most visitors to the district never find.
- A city loan program aimed specifically at this ZIP code helped fund the storefront renovations, which is why the turnaround happened here rather than in one of the other neighborhoods with empty brick buildings.
- Three Lutheran churches once stood within four blocks of each other on West 3rd Street: Bethany at 23rd Avenue (1889), Zion at 25th (1888), and Holy Trinity at 27th (around 1910), founded by a younger generation from Bethany who wanted to worship in English. The communities that settled here arrived speaking different languages and built separate congregations a block apart. All three eventually merged into one, kept the Zion building, sold the other two, and took a new name: Spirit of God Lutheran.
- Enger Tower on the hill above gives the single best view in Duluth, and it belongs more to this side of town than to the east side that gets the tourist traffic.
