Riverside

Daily life in Riverside, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Riverside neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Errands from Riverside mean driving, and the useful thing is that you have two roughly equidistant options.

Proctor, over the hill north at about ten minutes, has a walkable main street with grocery, pharmacy, hardware and a bank. The Spirit Valley district, about twelve minutes northeast, has the same on a larger strip. Households here use whichever direction they were already going.

Miller Hill, about eighteen minutes northeast, covers big-box retail and most chain services. Downtown is twenty minutes for banking, the main library branch and professional services.

Medical is the longer reach: Essentia Health and St. Luke's are both downtown-adjacent at roughly twenty minutes, with the Miller Hill medical offices at eighteen. Households managing regular appointments should weigh that seriously.

Gas is on Grand Avenue. The compensating practice, universal out here, is to batch: shop bigger and less often, combine trips, keep a full pantry through the winter, and treat the drive as the price of living on the water.

Noise: Quiet. Grand Avenue traffic is the main sound, along with seasonal activity from Spirit Mountain above and the marina below. No freeway, no port, no rail yard directly on the neighborhood.
