Local lore in Midway Township, Minnesota

• The township is named Midway and so is a road, and they are not the same thing. Midway Road runs a long way north through the county, well past the township that shares its name.
• Jay Cooke State Park is the back fence. A township of under 600 housing units has one of Minnesota's better-known state parks as its southern boundary.
• Everyone says they are from Proctor. The schools, the groceries, the chamber and the historical society are all there, and the township's social life runs through it.
• Farmer Doug's stand on Lindahl Road is the local landmark, and the only food business inside the township boundary.
• The commonly quoted area is wrong. Secondary sources repeat 18.0 square miles from the 2010 census; the Census Bureau's current published boundary gives 13.98 square miles, all land. This guide uses the current figure.
• The Munger Trail's best section is next door. The Carlton to Duluth stretch of the 70-mile paved trail runs through Jay Cooke and finishes with rock cuts and harbor views.
• There is no bus. Not a reduced service, none: the nearest DTA route serves Proctor, ten minutes east.
