• Your kids go to Proctor. A Duluth address here almost always means Proctor Public Schools, an arrangement dating to a 1940s transfer of the neighborhood's students and its school building into ISD 704. Buyers, lenders, and real-estate search filters get it wrong constantly.
• Vinland Street changes its name at the city line. Cross Boundary Avenue heading west and it becomes Proctor's 5th Street, which is the neatest illustration anywhere of how this neighborhood actually works.
• The Bayview intersection is the local compass. Vinland, Getchell Road, Skyline Parkway, and Highland Street all meet at the top of the hill. Highland drops to West Duluth, Getchell runs to Hermantown, and Skyline runs the length of the city.
• You are 700 feet above your own neighbors. The city groups Bayview Heights with West Duluth, but at roughly 1,270 to 1,340 feet it sits about 700 feet higher than the neighborhoods it is grouped with, and about 700 feet above the surface of Lake Superior.
• The snow line is real. It is common for Bayview Heights to be in snow while the lakeshore neighborhoods are in rain, and residents watch elevation rather than forecast totals.
• Skyline Parkway turns to gravel just west of the neighborhood and stays that way out to the old-growth maples at Magney-Snively, which in late September is the best fall color drive inside any Minnesota city.
