Superior reads as a quiet, low-traffic residential city with active commercial corridors along Tower Avenue and Belknap Street and a busier bar-district feel on the north end of Tower on weekend nights. Sidewalks are common on the older grid, streets are lit, and the flat layout means good sightlines.
For anything beyond feel, use published data rather than impressions. The Superior Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice publish reported-offense statistics, and those are the correct starting point for current figures rather than a commercial "safety score." We describe streets and conditions, never the people who live on them.
The practical cautions here are environmental and industrial rather than criminal. Superior hosts a refinery, tank farms, and rail traffic carrying industrial cargo, and the 2018 refinery fire and evacuation is within recent memory for everyone in the city; ask about a specific address's distance from those facilities if it matters to you. Bridge ice and harbor fog affect the commute. Wisconsin Point has genuine rip and cold-water risk, and Lake Superior does not forgive a long swim in June. Ticks are a real concern in the Municipal Forest and on the Point from spring through fall.
