Superior is a car city with unusually easy driving. Downtown Duluth is about 12 minutes over the John A. Blatnik Bridge on I-535/US 53 or the Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge on US 2, the Miller Hill retail corridor is about 18, and the airport is about 22. US 2, US 53, and WI 35 all pass through, so highway access is immediate in a way it never is from Duluth's east side. The Duluth Transit Authority runs regular service on both sides of the border, covering Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, and Superior. Superior is served by Route 110 between the Duluth Transit Center and Tower Avenue, the Route 111 Superior Circulator, and Route 211 through Billings Park and the East End. The DTA rebuilt its whole network in 2023 under the Better Bus Blueprint, consolidating 33 routes into roughly 14 with better weekday frequency, so confirm current numbering and timetables before you plan a commute around them.
Biking is the quiet advantage. The Osaugie Trail gives five paved, flat, car-free miles along the bay, the Municipal Forest carries dirt trails inside the city, and the Bong Bridge has a separated path connecting to Duluth's west side. Nothing here requires climbing. If you have spent a season trying to commute by bicycle up a Duluth hillside, this alone can decide the question.
Winter driving, honestly. Superior gets real snow, but usually less than Duluth's east-side hillside, because the heaviest lake-effect bands are steered onto the Minnesota shore by the prevailing wind direction (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). More to the point, flat ground changes what snow means. A storm that leaves a 12% avenue in Lakeside impassable leaves Tower Avenue merely slushy. The genuine winter hazards here are different: blowing and drifting snow across open flat ground, fog off the harbor, and glare ice on the bridges, which freeze before the roads on either side of them. Budget for that and Superior is the easier winter address in this metro.
