Superior is easier for errands than most of Duluth, because the city is flat, compact, and has full-scale retail inside its own limits. Grocery, pharmacy, hardware, and gas are all available along Tower Avenue, Belknap Street, and the US 2/53 corridor, and none of it requires a drive across a bridge. Big-box retail is present in the city, and the Miller Hill corridor in Duluth is about 18 minutes if you want more.
Two cross-border quirks shape routine shopping. Minnesota exempts clothing and groceries from sales tax while Wisconsin taxes clothing at 5% plus local, so a lot of Superior households do clothing runs in Duluth. Fuel, alcohol, and tobacco pricing differ by state and shift the flow the other way at various times. Neither is a reason to choose a city, but both are visible in how people here plan a Saturday.
Medical care is split between Essentia Health's Superior clinic and hospital services and the two large Duluth systems 12 to 15 minutes away, so specialist care generally means crossing the bridge. The Superior Public Library is downtown. Douglas County offices, the courthouse, and vehicle registration are all in the city, which matters more than you would think in the first month after a cross-state move: new residents should budget an afternoon for Wisconsin driver's license, registration, and voter registration, plus a conversation with a tax preparer about filing in two states.
