Some categories this region is genuinely strong in. Pizza, burgers, breweries, smoked fish: the Twin Ports punch above a metro of 175,000 in all of them, and the roundups on this site run long as a result.
Mexican food is not one of those categories, and pretending otherwise would not help anybody. This list is four entries long. They are four good entries, and if you have just moved here from a market with a real taqueria scene, you should calibrate now rather than in six months.
A note on method. We have not eaten at all four and we are not going to invent a review. No ratings, no fabricated visits. These are editorial picks based on what each kitchen actually serves, how long it has been doing it, and its standing locally. What we verified is that every restaurant below is open, at the address given, with the hours stated, confirmed from its own website in August 2026. Several other Mexican restaurants exist in the region; the ones we could not confirm are named at the bottom rather than quietly included.
1. Hungry Hippie Tacos, Lincoln Park
1810 West Superior Street, Lincoln Park. Summer: daily 11am to 8pm. Winter: Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 11am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday to 8pm.
The most distinctive taco in the region, and the one to try first. Hungry Hippie builds on puffy homemade taco shells rather than a standard tortilla, and fills them with house-smoked meats. That combination is not something you will find elsewhere here, and it is the reason this is the lead entry rather than the largest menu.
It sits at the eastern end of the Lincoln Park Craft District walk, a few doors from Duluth Tap Exchange, OMC Smokehouse and Love Creamery, which makes it the taco stop on an evening that also involves beer and ice cream.
Note the seasonal schedule. The winter hours drop a day and pull the close earlier, which is standard for this region but catches people who checked once in July. There is a second location up the shore in Grand Marais.
2. Burrito Union, Duluth hillside
1332 East 4th Street, Duluth. Monday to Friday 11am to 10pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 10pm. Kitchen closes 9pm. Weekend breakfast 10am to 2pm.
The full-service one, on East 4th Street on the hillside above downtown, and the one that solves the most situations. Burrito Union does signature burritos with a proper bar attached: tequila, craft beer and Mexican imports, with a happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 3pm to 6pm on appetizers, margaritas and palomas.
Two things worth knowing. It serves weekend breakfast, 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday, which is a genuinely short list in Duluth and does not appear in most breakfast guides including our own. And the kitchen shuts at 9pm while the room runs to 10pm, which is the same room-versus-kitchen gap we flag in where to eat late.
The business now trades as Burrito Union Tequila Bar; its old domain redirects to the new one.
3. Little Angie's Cantina & Grill, Canal Park
11 East Buchanan Street, Canal Park. Open daily from 11am. Kitchen to 9:30pm Sunday to Thursday and 10:30pm Friday and Saturday; bar to 11pm and midnight respectively.
The Canal Park answer, and the only Mexican option we could confirm inside the tourist district. Little Angie's describes itself as "Tex-Mex, Southwest and a little bit more," in a room hung with Southwest artifacts, with food arriving sizzling at the table. It is part of the Grandma's group.
Set expectations correctly: this is Tex-Mex and a Canal Park room rather than a taqueria. Taken as that, it is open seven days, it runs later than most kitchens in the district, and it is walkable from most Canal Park lodging and the Lakewalk.
4. Pedro's Grill and Cantina, Cloquet
7 8th Street, Cloquet. Sunday to Thursday 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday to 10pm.
Twenty-five minutes southwest, family owned, and the Mexican kitchen for the whole Carlton County side of the market. Pedro's serves what it describes as authentic Mexican dishes using fresh produce and, in its own words, the finest meats, with a tequila bar attached.
It also has a patio with a fireplace, which nothing else on this list offers and which earns it a place in our lake-view and patio roundup too.
If you are house hunting in Cloquet, Esko or Carlton, this is the one on your list.
What we could not confirm
Three more exist in the records and none of them publishes a website we could reach, so none is recommended here:
- Chacho's Taqueria, 329 Canal Park Drive, Duluth. A taqueria in Canal Park is exactly what this list is short of, and we would like to include it. No first-party source.
- Maya Mexican Restaurant, 4702 Miller Trunk Highway, Hermantown. No first-party source.
- TequilaTown, Esko. No first-party source, and see the caution below.
Pedro's Superior location is a fourth near-miss. Pedro's own site lists a Superior location with a patio and the same hours as Cloquet, but publishes no street address for it and notes it is online ordering only. We are not sending you across the bridge to an address we do not have.
And one caution on Esko. Our records currently show TequilaTown and Eskomo Pizza Pies at the same address, 3 Highway 61 East. Two businesses do not usually share a storefront, so one of those has most likely replaced the other. We have flagged it internally and are not publishing either as an operating recommendation until it is resolved.
What this says about the region
Mexican food is a real gap here, and it is a gap with an obvious shape. Four confirmed restaurants across Duluth, Canal Park, the hillside and Cloquet, one taqueria we cannot verify, and nothing confirmable in Superior at all. If a weekly taco habit is part of your life, this is one of the few food categories where the Twin Ports will feel smaller than where you came from.
The flip side is that the good ones are distinctive rather than generic. Puffy house-made shells with smoked meats is not a thing most cities have. A tequila bar with weekend breakfast is not either.
And the geography is the usual Twin Ports geography. Lincoln Park has one, Canal Park has one, the hillside has one, and the fourth is twenty-five minutes down I-35. Nothing in Superior, nothing in the Lakeside or east-side neighborhoods, nothing above the hill except an unverified Hermantown room.
