About Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary
Holy Rosary Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Duluth and the most significant church building on the city's east side. It stands at 2801 East 4th Street, on the shoulder of the hill between the East End and Congdon Park, and it is the mother church for a diocese covering ten counties of northeastern Minnesota.
The parish was founded in 1923. The present stone cathedral, Italianate in style, was completed in 1957 and took over the diocesan seat from the former Sacred Heart Cathedral downtown, which survives as the Sacred Heart Music Center (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-08-13). That succession is worth knowing locally: two buildings in the city carry cathedral history, and only this one is still a cathedral.
Its practical reach extends well past its own block. The cathedral is administered together with St. Michael's in Lakeside as the Catholic Parishes of East Duluth, so a single clustered staff serves families from the East End out to the Lester River. It also anchors Catholic education here: the Holy Rosary campus of Stella Maris Academy sits directly across the street at 2802 East 4th Street.
