About Spirit of God Lutheran Church
Spirit of God Lutheran Church meets at 2431 West 3rd Street in Lincoln Park, and its name is the end of a story that ran for more than a century on four blocks of one street.
Three Lutheran congregations once stood within four blocks of each other here, and the split between them was one of language rather than doctrine. Bethany Lutheran, at 23rd Avenue West, was founded in 1889. Zion Lutheran, at 25th Avenue West, held its first organizational meeting in 1888. Holy Trinity Lutheran, at 27th Avenue West, was founded around 1910 by younger members from Bethany who wanted to worship in English.
That is the whole settlement history of West Duluth compressed into three buildings: communities that arrived speaking different languages keeping separate churches a block apart, and a second generation splitting off again over the shift to English. It describes how the neighborhood was built, not who lives here now.
Facing shrinking and ageing congregations and three buildings to maintain, all three merged into a single church. They kept the Zion building, sold the other two, and took a new name that belonged to none of them.
The practical note for anyone using this guide: Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln Park no longer exists under that name. If you find it in an older directory at this address, this is the congregation now there.
