About Cathedral of Christ the King
The Cathedral of Christ the King at 1111 Belknap Street is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Superior, which covers the northwestern third of Wisconsin.
The parish was established in 1926 and the building went up fast: the project was announced in February 1926, ground was broken on June 23, Bishop Joseph Pinten blessed and laid the cornerstone on October 24, and the cathedral was dedicated on Christmas Day 1927. It is built of limestone in an Italianate style and is the most architecturally significant religious building on the Wisconsin side of the Twin Ports harbor.
As the cathedral it hosts diocesan liturgies, ordinations, and events in addition to serving as a parish church for Superior. For Catholic households moving to Superior this is both the parish and the seat of the diocese, a different arrangement from Duluth, where Holy Rosary Cathedral serves the Diocese of Duluth across the harbor.
