About Denfeld High School

Denfeld High School serves grades 9 through 12 for the western half of Duluth, enrolling roughly 951 students (NCES Common Core of Data, 2024-2025, accessed 2026-08-13). It is one of two comprehensive high schools in Duluth Public Schools, paired with East on the other side of the city, and the Denfeld and East rivalry is one of the older ones in Minnesota high school sports.

The building at 401 North 44th Avenue West is a landmark in its own right, a substantial early twentieth century high school that anchors the West Duluth streetscape in a way few schools do. It draws from Laura MacArthur, Piedmont, and Stowe elementaries and from Lincoln Park Middle School.

Denfeld is smaller than East, at roughly two-thirds the enrollment, which cuts both ways: smaller cohorts and easier access to activities, against a narrower course catalog than a larger school can offer. Families comparing the two sides of the city should look at the specific programs their student cares about rather than at the headline size.
