About Grassy Point

Grassy Point is the point of land reaching into the St. Louis Bay at the southern edge of Duluth's Irving neighborhood, and it gives that neighborhood its water frontage.

This is estuary rather than open Lake Superior. The St. Louis River estuary is one of the larger freshwater estuary systems in North America and the water here is calm, shallower and considerably warmer than the big lake, which makes it a different proposition for paddling, fishing and birding.

The shoreline in this stretch is shared ground. Much of the bay edge through Irving and Oneota remains working rail and industrial land, a direct survival of the port economy West Duluth was built to serve, and the public and restored sections sit alongside it. The estuary as a whole has been the subject of decades of restoration effort, much of it coordinated through the St. Louis River Alliance, and the improvement in water quality and habitat over that period is one of the genuine regional success stories.
