About United Lutheran Church of Proctor

United Lutheran Church of Proctor at 701 Third Avenue is an ELCA congregation, and the name is a literal description rather than a flourish. It is the unification of two long-standing Proctor-area Lutheran churches, Bethlehem Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran, each of which had been in existence for more than seventy-five years before they came together.

That pattern is worth recognising because it recurs across this region. In Duluth's Lincoln Park, three Lutheran congregations within four blocks of one another merged into a single body and took a new name. In Proctor, two did the same. Shrinking and ageing congregations, several buildings to heat through a northern Minnesota winter, and a practical decision to become one church.

For a town of about 3,000 built around a rail yard, United Lutheran and St. Rose a few blocks away have been the two anchors of community life outside the school for well over a century, and both still sit inside the walkable downtown grid.
