About St. Paul's Episcopal Church
St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 1710 East Superior Street is one of the finest church buildings in Duluth and a direct product of the city's boom-era ambition. When the congregation announced plans for a new building in 1911, it went to Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson of New York, the firm that defined American Gothic Revival church architecture in the early twentieth century, and the present building went up between 1912 and 1914 (St. Paul's parish history and SAH Archipedia, both accessed 2026-08-13).
That commission tells you something about east Duluth at the time. This is the same decade that produced Glensheen, the Congdon Park street plan, and the boulevard system, when iron and shipping money was building eastward and hiring nationally rather than locally.
The church sits on the Superior Street corridor between the East End and Congdon Park, which puts it within a short walk or a few minutes' drive of both. For buyers touring the east side, it is one of the buildings worth stopping at even if you never attend a service.
The congregation is older than the building by nearly fifty years. Its first recorded prayer service was on 5 August 1866, when Duluth was barely a town, and its first church was finished in 1869 downtown at 209 North Lake Avenue. Architecture: Gothic Revival. The congregation announced plans for a new building in 1911 and turned to the New York firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson, among the most prominent ecclesiastical architects in the country at the time.
