About Pilgrim Congregational Church (UCC)
Pilgrim Congregational is one of the oldest congregations in Duluth, founded in 1870 when the city itself was barely organized. Its first home was a modest wooden building on East Second Street, dedicated in 1871; a second building by William H. Willcox and Clarence H. Johnston Sr. served from 1888 to 1915.
The present church at 2310 East 4th Street is the third, designed by the Duluth architects Frederick German and Leif Jenssen and first used on September 24, 1917. It is English Gothic: a high nave with a beamed ceiling and a single side aisle, a central bell tower with lancet arches, a crenellated roof, extensive stained glass, and a covered automobile entrance, which was a distinctly 1917 idea about how a congregation would arrive.
Its position on East 4th Street places it in the East End, a short walk from the Cathedral and within a few minutes of Congdon Park. The Duluth Preservation Alliance features it on its East End walking tour, which is the best way to see it alongside the surrounding houses of the same period.
