About Carlton Secondary School
This is the combined middle and high school for the consolidated Carlton-Wrenshall district, taking grades 6 through 12. There is no separate middle school building; a sixth-grader and a senior attend the same school.
The important point for anyone house-hunting around Carlton is that the school is no longer in Carlton. Wrenshall voters approved consolidation with Carlton by 430 to 365 on 12 May 2026, effective 1 July, and the arrangement retires the Carlton high school building and moves secondary education to the former Wrenshall School at 207 Pioneer Drive in Wrenshall (Pine Journal, 13 May 2026). So a family buying in Carlton on the assumption that teenagers walk to school on School Avenue should check the actual bus route before signing anything.
A Pine Journal report of 29 May 2026 says the two boards voted unanimously to rename the Wrenshall building Silver Creek Secondary School, after the creek that runs through Jay Cooke State Park, choosing it from a shortlist after a community survey. This guide has verified that report directly, but it is the only place the name appears: no state or federal directory carries it, no district page we could reach uses it, and no later coverage repeats it. This record therefore keeps the pre-consolidation name and treats Silver Creek as reported rather than confirmed. The move itself is not in doubt; only the name is.
The consolidation carries other consequences worth knowing: the Pine Journal reported estimated tax effects of roughly $164 a year more on the Carlton side and about $239 a year less on the Wrenshall side for a $300,000 home, and the dissolution of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton sports co-op.
Two cautions on the record itself. This guide found the new building names in exactly one place, a dated and bylined report of the public board vote, whose wording we verified directly; no state or federal database yet carries them, and neither did any district web page we could reach, which is normal lag rather than a contradiction. And no post-consolidation enrolment figure exists yet, so this guide publishes none. For scale, the last federal counts for the two predecessor secondary schools were 145 at Carlton and 160 at Wrenshall, which puts the combined school somewhere near three hundred across grades 6 through 12.
Scale remains the main thing a family should weigh. Even combined this is a small secondary school, which offers unusual access, since it is difficult for a student to go unnoticed and straightforward to join a team or a program, but limits how deep an in-house course catalog can be. Advanced and specialized coursework typically depends on shared arrangements, online options, or postsecondary enrollment, and at these enrollments some state report card measures are suppressed for student privacy. Confirm current building assignments, bus routes, and course offerings with the district office rather than inferring them.
