About Superior Hiking Trail Association
The Superior Hiking Trail Association builds, maintains, and promotes one of the best long-distance footpaths in the United States, and it does it from a small office in Two Harbors at 618 1st Avenue (Superior Hiking Trail Association, accessed 2026-08-13).
The trail runs the ridge line above Lake Superior for hundreds of miles, with free backcountry campsites spaced for through-hikers and day-hike access at trailheads from Jay Cooke State Park in the south through Duluth and up the North Shore.
Volunteer trail crews and section adopters do the bulk of the maintenance, which makes the association one of the more accessible ways for a resident of the North Shore or the Twin Ports to be usefully involved in something.
