About Proctor Area Historical Society

The Proctor Area Historical Society keeps the record of a town that exists because a railroad needed flat ground. Its museum and archive document the founding of the settlement around the Duluth, Missabe and Northern yard in 1892, the peak decades when Proctor sorted more iron ore than anywhere else on earth, and the town that grew around it.

Its "Village History" material is the best available public account of Proctor's founding, including the origin of the name in J. Proctor Knott's 1871 congressional speech mocking the idea of a railroad to Duluth (Proctor Area Historical Society, accessed 2026-08-13).

The museum grounds and gazebo are also used for community events.
