About Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory
Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is the nonprofit that runs the raptor counts, banding research, and public education programs on the ridge above east Duluth. Its long-running migration count is one of the more valuable long-term datasets on North American raptor populations, and it is conducted in full view of the public.
For neighbors in Lakeside, Lester Park, and Congdon Park, the observatory is the reason a national and international audience shows up on their hill every September and October. Staff and volunteers at the main overlook call out birds as they pass, which turns a scenic viewpoint into something closer to a live seminar, and the banding demonstrations put birds in front of people at arm's length.
Beyond the count season, the organization does habitat stewardship on the reserve and school and community programming through the year. Membership, volunteer greeter shifts, and program registration are the main ways in.
