About Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is a sovereign tribal government whose reservation borders Cloquet on the west, and it is one of the largest institutional presences in Carlton County.
The Band operates its own school, health and human services, natural resources and conservation programs, and enterprises including Black Bear Casino Resort at the I-35 and MN 210 junction, which is among the region's larger employers. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College operates in Cloquet in partnership with the Minnesota State system, giving a city of about 12,500 a two-year college campus.
Cloquet Public Schools works with the Band on Ojibwe language and culture programming, and the two communities' economies are closely intertwined. For anyone moving to Carlton County, the Band's institutions are part of the practical fabric of the area.
