About United Protestant Church
United Protestant Church is the surviving congregation in Morgan Park, and its name is itself an artifact of how the company town was built. Rather than putting up separate buildings for each Protestant denomination, the planned community was given a single shared Protestant church, which is why it carries the "United" name a century later.
That arrangement tells you something about company-town planning generally: US Steel built one of each thing it considered a community needed, at a scale it controlled, rather than letting institutions accumulate the way they do in a speculatively developed neighborhood.
It is now the only church left in Morgan Park. St. Margaret Mary, the town's Catholic parish, closed in 2015 and the building was subsequently demolished, which makes United Protestant the last surviving religious institution from the original plan.
