Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 602 Fourth Avenue was founded in 1889, and it is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Northeastern Minnesota Synod.

The founding date is worth pausing on, because Bethlehem Lutheran a few blocks away was founded in the same year. Two separate congregations, established independently of each other in the same small ore-dock town in 1889, five years after the first iron shipped from Agate Bay. Both are still going, a few hundred feet apart, more than a century and a third later. That is the settlement history of the North Shore compressed into two church cornerstones.
