About Asbury United Methodist Church
Asbury United Methodist Church at 6822 Grand Avenue is the oldest Methodist congregation in Duluth, with a history tracing back more than 160 years (Asbury United Methodist Church, accessed 2026-08-13). That puts its origins in the 1860s, before Duluth was much of a city and well before West Duluth was annexed into it.
Its location on Grand Avenue at the far western end of the city places it among the neighborhoods that grew around the mills, the rail yards, and later the steel works at Morgan Park, and it has served that population through the region's whole industrial arc.
For a neighborhood guide, the significance is straightforward: this is the west side's deepest institutional root. Congregations of this age are the reason West Duluth reads as a set of established communities rather than as an outlying district, and they are among the few organizations that predate the industry that built the area.
