About Seven Bridges Road (Amity Creek)
Seven Bridges Road climbs Amity Creek from the western edge of Lester Park to Skyline Parkway, crossing and recrossing the stream on stone arch bridges the whole way. It is the eastern terminus of Duluth's boulevard system and one of the best short drives, walks, or bike climbs in the region.
Samuel Snively, a land developer who later became Duluth's longest-serving mayor, donated and assembled the land and built the original road, which opened to the public in 1901 carrying nine wooden bridges. Within a decade it had fallen apart, and the city parks board rebuilt it, reopening in 1912 as Amity Parkway with nine new stone-arch bridges (Duluth News Tribune, accessed 2026-08-13). The name has never matched the count, and locals will tell you so.
Amity Creek runs beside the road the entire way, with small falls, chutes, and swimming holes at intervals. The road closes to vehicles for the winter, which turns it into a walking and skiing route and is when residents like it best. Pullouts are small and the shoulders are narrow, so park at Lester Park and walk up if the lot at the top is full.
